Finding the Right HandymanBy Jennifer Weldon Today's hectic schedules and busy lifestyles leave us with less time than is needed to properly care for our homes. Having a handyman at your service that you can call upon to perform small household repairs and maintenance is necessary to keep our homes looking and functioning their best. Finding the right handyman is possible by following a few guidelines. Needs Prior to your search for a handyman you should evaluate what your needs are. If your home is older you may need someone experienced in repairing homes of that age. Older homes may have different wiring and plumbing, more molding and carpentry needs, and just more TLC. A newly built home should only require maintenance type items typical to general wear and tear. If you have had problems in one specific area, you will want to ensure the handyman you hire is skilled in that arena. It is usually a better value for you to have the handyman handle as many items as possible in lieu of him having to bring in different contractors. Likewise if you've kept your home maintained regularly until now, a handyman won't have as much immediate work to do than if repair work has been neglected. Finding one A good starting point to finding the right handyman will be referrals from people you know that have used the handyman and were pleased with the work performed. You can also gain valuable information from them you may not be comfortable asking strangers including their costs, demeanor, trustworthiness and reliability. These are all important traits for a handyman to have. You will be entrusting them to perform work on your home, often at times that no one is there. Referrals from other contractors who have worked on your home are another avenue to try. Interview Have any potential handymen interview with you at your home. They can tour your home and grounds to gather an idea of what kind of work will need to be performed and the overall shape your home is in. The handyman should be able to provide you with an estimate of how much time it will take him to perform regular maintenance items. This is your time to make sure the handyman is properly licensed, insured and bonded against any accidents that may occur while working on your home. You should also verify what kind of experience they have and if there are any areas of home repair that they cannot perform. References Always ask for at least three references from a potential handyman. Be sure to contact the references provided and inquire about what type of work was performed, when it was performed, and their satisfaction with the handyman in general. Also ask what type of home they have and its age. In this way you can see that a handyman has worked on a home similar to yours. Cost A fee structure should be worked out before any arrangement is entered into. Whether it be a per hour, per job, or a flat monthly rate; both parties should have a clear understanding of the charges involved and what that includes. You should also determine if the handyman will procure any supplies and bill them to you, or if you will furnish supplies. Finally, decide if your prior approval is needed before calling in a specialized contractor when needed. Having the right handyman will ensure your home is kept in tip top shape. This will increase the value of your home and your comfort, while also preventing future costly repairs due to neglect. |
