The Outdoor Kitchen

Article By Jinky Bagagnan

The demand for outdoor kitchens is rising. A statement from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) says that homeowners are demanding outdoor living enhancements. The 2008 Consumer Views Survey by HGTV and Casual Living also indicates that almost 20 percent of the respondents who reported that they will have replaced their grill by 2013 plan to integrate their replacement grill in an outdoor kitchen setup. The following are some of the reasons why outdoor kitchens are in demand:

Reduce Cooling Costs
An indoor kitchen is ideal during winter. During summer, however, cooking indoors can be a little uncomfortable. The heat from the stove raises indoor temperature, the air-conditioner has to work hard to keep the home cool and comfortable and cooling costs rise in turn. An outdoor kitchen can help reduce your cooling costs. When it's hot, you can simply cook outdoors.

Increase the Resale Value of Your Home
Remodeling per se increases the value of a home. Since an outdoor kitchen is currently a popular trend among homeowners, an outdoor kitchen addition is sure to increase the resale value of any home. The popularity of outdoor kitchens, moreover, also means that a home with an outdoor kitchen is bound to be more attractive to potential homebuyers.

Spend Quality Time with Your Family
An outdoor kitchen is a venue where family members can spend some quality time with each other. In an outdoor kitchen, cooking can become a social activity. You can cook while sipping wine and chatting with your spouse. You can also watch over your children who could be playing play ball in the yard, swimming in your pool or helping you prepare your dinner.

Entertain in Style
Outdoor kitchens are great for entertaining. Supplement your outdoor kitchen with a tropical garden or a pool and you have yourself a great venue for parties. The great thing about outdoor parties is that you usually have greater space available; thus, you can invite more guests. By entertaining outdoors, moreover, you can avoid the typical indoor party messes and protect from damage your antiques and the furnishings you value.

Maximize Your Living Space
If you have idle space in your yard, adding an outdoor kitchen makes even more sense. Adding an outdoor kitchen will let you maximize the available space in your home and expand your living space. With strategic seating and a great design, your outdoor kitchen can become another room – specifically an "outdoor room" just like the living room or the family room.

There are truly many benefits to adding an outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens, however, mean different things to different people. Therefore, before you add an outdoor kitchen to your home, talk to your remodeling contractor. You need to work out how your outdoor kitchen should be designed, where it should be located and what specific appliances it should contain.
