Free Estimates - No Obligation - Fast and Simple

Preparing your bathroom for a remodeling project is essential. Electricity and plumbing are both vital utilities that need special precautions taken when working specific tasks. Depending on what your remodeling project entails your prep work may vary. However, there are a few constants to be done. Your professional contractor may provide you with some items that should be done before their arrival. Here are some prepping steps to be carried out.

Traffic Flow

Plan out a traffic route that is the quickest from the contractor’s work truck to the bathroom you are remodeling. The contractor and workers will be making several trips back and forth. Determine where vehicles should be parked and which entryway into your house will be used. Lay down plastic, old carpeting or a tarp for the pathway through your home so that workers can leave their shoes on for better efficiency. You will protect your floors for dirt and scuffing and clean up after they are gone will be easy.

Empty the Bathroom

Remove all items from the bathroom before the contractor arrives onsite. These items will get in the way and need to be removed at some point. By doing so before the workers arrive will ensure they can begin working as soon as they get to your location.

• Bathtub & Shower: Remove all soaps, razors, shampoos, bath toys, mirrors, shower curtains etc.

• Toilet: Remove toilet cover, any air freshener or toilet cleaner attached to the toilet.

• Sink: Remove all soaps, toothbrushes, glasses, or anything sitting on the counter.

• Sink Base: Clean out all items that are beneath the sink . If you are replacing the cabinet entirely or the sink base, clean out the drawers as well.

• Floor: Remove everything on the floor including bathmats, magazine racks, decor items, etc.

• Walls: Remove anything hanging on the wall including towels, bathrobes, pictures. If you are painting the walls or replacing/adding tile, you should go ahead and remove the towel racks, toilet paper holder and anything attached to the walls. Clean out the medicine cabinet if applicable.

Bathroom Do It Yourself

If you have a plan with your bathroom contractor to perform some items yourself to save time and money, there a few additional steps you can take. Be sure your contractor and you both agree that you will be performing these items before starting the work.

• Removing Flooring or Tile: If you are redoing your floor you can start the removal process of the existing flooring. If you are replacing any shower tiles you can remove these as well. Your contractor can give you specific instructions on how to do this.

• Shutting the Water Off: If your remodeling project involves any work with the plumbing or plumbing fixtures, the water will need to be shut off before work begins. By locating your water shut off valve and turning it to the off position you can again ensure they can go to work upon arrival.

• Shower Doors: If you have shower doors in lieu of a shower curtain, and your remodeling project involves work in the shower, you can remove the shower doors. This is another time saving strategy for your contractor.
