Lighting styles and trends have changed dramatically in recent years. If the lighting fixtures in your home are 10 or more years old, now would be a great time to take advantage of all of the choices and technologies currently available. Remodeling your lighting can have many positive impacts on your home.

Resale Value
A lighting remodel adds value to your home. You may not be able to recoup all of your initial investment, new lighting will make your home more attractive to potential buyers. New lighting can instantly bring a room up to date, and updated fixtures throughout your home can give your entire home a more modern feel. Having updated lighting may give your home the edge over others on the market with older, outdated lighting.

Energy Efficiency
Your household energy use can be reduced simply by renovating your lighting. New CFL and LED light fixtures are extremely energy efficient, using less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Also consider incorporating natural lighting for free, readily available light. Enlarging windows, installing skylights, or simply removing heavy window coverings can increase the light in a room, making it seem more open and airy. This can also eliminate the need to install additional artificial lighting. If you install new windows, choose Low E or other energy efficient glass, these block UV rays from entering your home. This promotes a more steady indoor temperature and prevents the fading of fabrics and furniture. Install heating lights in your bathroom to prevent the need to crank up the heat in the whole house to take the chill out of the air while you are in your tub or shower.

Convenience
Chances are, if your home was not custom built, your lighting and light switches aren't exactly where you'd like them to be. Even if you did initially design your lighting system with an electrician, lighting needs change over time. If you choose to remodel your lighting, you will be able to place each fixture and switch exactly where it is needed. Conveniently-placed switches for work spaces, three-way switches, or the ability to control a single light from two different switches are just a few examples of what an electrician can put into place for your custom lighting needs. If you've renovated your patio to create an outdoor entertaining area, you may wish to add appropriate lighting, or you may want to control a reading lamp by your easy chair with a switch. No matter what the situation, a lighting solution is available to you. Look at the current lighting in your home, and think about what changes you'd like to make for more convenient lighting.

Style
A lighting renovation allows you to match your lighting to the current style of your home. If you've lived in your home for many years, your current style of decor may no longer match the lighting and light fixtures. By remodeling, you can choose the look, finish, and models of fixtures that best reflect your current decorating scheme. Consistent lighting can put the final decorator's touch on the look of your home.

A lighting remodel can be very beneficial to your home. Consider the lighting you have now, and determine what you'd most like to change. Be sure to keep convenience, style, energy efficiency, and resale value of your home in mind when making your final decisions!
